Updates: MATE Act Requirements
The new Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act will directly affect Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) licensees beginning next month. The Act will require new (or renewing) DEA licensees to have completed at least eight hours of training (CE) specifically on opioid (or other substance use disorders) and the appropriate treatment of patient pain.
The MATE Act can be read in its entirety here, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) posted related updates for DEA licensees, and helpful information from the Department of Justice can be read here.
The DEA was given 90 days (from March 27, 2023) to inform practitioners about how to meet the new training requirements before they take effect (on June 27, 2023).
In response to the ruling, the ACCME has compiled an FAQ page to address the provider questions related to the new requirements and their connection to CE. They address questions such as “What does the MATE Act mean for accredited CE?”, “When must clinicians complete the requirement?” and “What content can be included?”

CE Compliance Help: New Checklist Resource
The latest course on ACCME Academy has been unveiled: Accessibility in Continuing Education. Designed with CE planners and faculty in mind, the purpose is specifically to provide strategies for the development of education that “is accessible and that can promote healthcare equity”.
This course consists of 5 hours of instruction, total, and covers four key content areas: Connecting Health Equity and CE, Learning Together with Patient Partners in CME, DEI Tools for CE Professionals, and Accessibility in CE.
The ACCME Academy, launched June 1, 2021, was exclusively designed to be an “educational home for the continuing education (CE) community”. Since its inception, the ACCME Academy has offered accredited providers free access to interactive courses, multimedia, and plentiful resources targeted at enhancing the value of CE.
Primarily, the ACCME Academy offers courses and curricula that assist providers in designing and delivering accredited education that is engaging and effective. Special focus exists in areas like faculty development and achieving Accreditation with Commendation. A few additional features include: support tools and resources for fulfilling accreditation requirements, using PARS, engaging both clinicians and patients as partners in CE teaching and planning. Additionally, the Academy is working towards creating a community for educators to learn from and with one another.
