ACCME: Spotlight on Positive Exposure
The recent Joint Accreditation Leadership Summit featured a keynote speaker who is making waves in the CE enterprise. Twenty-five years ago, fashion photographer Rick Guidotti launched a not-for-profit organization called Positive Exposure. Positive Exposure’s entire aim is to promote greater inclusivity of individuals facing stigmas due to health conditions and/or genetic differences, through photography and film.
Joint Accreditation Leadership Summit attendees were inspired by Rick’s story and passion for client advocation. Rick’s work intersects with accredited CE through the mutual promoting of greater humanity and inclusion in healthcare. One of the ACCME’s current strategic aims (and that of Joint Accreditation’s) is diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Positive Exposure began with a focus on individuals with albinism and has expanded tremendously from there. While Rick’s day job has him employed as a fashion photographer for companies like L’Oreal and GQ, through Positive Exposure he has worked with a number of medical schools and medical specialty societies to facilitate medical students’ and health professionals’ understanding of syndromes and genetic conditions from a perspective outside of patients being in the midst of a health crisis. And for individuals/families impacted by various genetic conditions, Positive Exposure has helped spotlight individuality and personality in a touching way.
Several leading, medical publishers are currently in communication with Positive Exposure regarding utilization its photography in medical textbooks, in an effort to depict particular diseases and conditions through less dehumanizing imagery.

CE Compliance Help: ACCME Myths of the Month
The ACCME is tackling common myths that surround accreditation and the efficient planning of CE activities. Novice and seasoned CE teams alike can benefit from regular reflection on processes and streamlining! Today, we start a summer newsletter series that features two key myths (and a summary of the response) each month.
Myth #1: The activity course chair must fill out the CME activity planning form.
This is false! It is true that many accredited CE providers utilize a planning document tool, providers are actually given plenty of flexibility in how to best capture the required information. Some gather it via phone conversation, for example, or via second-hand sources.
Myth #2: An accredited provider is required to publish learning objectives with at least one objective for each topic within an activity and must provide documentation of the published objectives to the ACCME.
This is also false. There are no accreditation criteria that requires the inclusion of learning objectives at all. There is no requirement for a specific number of learning objectives or that they are published/reported. Learners should be able to identify the purpose behind an educational activity, however.
You can view the complete list of myths (and related realities) here.
AOE Case Study: A Fresh Look at Operation Cost Management
AOE recently published its latest accredited CE/CME program case study that addresses costs to manage and successfully operate an accredited CE provider unit. Based on feedback and cost questions from more than 10 ACCME accredited providers, AOE worked with an accredited medical school to quantify staffing and operational costs.
Within 24 months, the provider implemented staffing solutions that increased activity development while reducing total costs by more than 25 percent. To learn more, a 5-min case study video developed by AOE’s Co-Founders Stephen Lewis and Annika Borvansky is available here. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions about this case study or any accredited CE program issue your team is facing.
